For aesthetic applications, specify powder coating or pre-galvanized finishes, ensuring the supplier follows ISO 12944 standards for paint durability.

To ensure safety and quality, suppliers should provide ISO 9001 certification for their manufacturing process. For the products themselves, look for CE Marking (EN 1090) if exporting to Europe, or ASTM/ASME compliance for the North American market. Always request a Material Traceability Report to link the finished box section back to the original heat number of the steel coil.

Steel box sections are typically Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) or Seamless. For structural loads, inspect the weld seam quality; it should be smooth and free of cracks or porosity. You should request Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT) or Eddy Current testing, especially for high-pressure or heavy-load applications to ensure there are no internal defects in the longitudinal weld.

Steel is highly susceptible to corrosion from sea air. You must mandate seaworthy packaging, which includes waterproof plastic wrapping and anti-rust oil application. Be wary of quotes significantly below the London Metal Exchange (LME) or local market rates, as this often indicates the use of scrap-heavy steel or under-gauge thickness (selling 2.75mm as 3.0mm).

Steel is frequently subject to Anti-Dumping (AD) and Countervailing Duties (CVD). Before finalizing an order, check your country's latest trade barriers against the origin country. For example, the US and EU have specific Section 232 or Safeguard measures. Always confirm the HS Code (typically 7306.61) with your customs broker to calculate the total Landed Cost accurately.

Utilize Trade Assurance services or Letters of Credit (L/C) to ensure payment is only released upon proof of shipment. Most importantly, hire a third-party inspection agency (like SGS or Intertek) to perform a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI). They will verify the quantity, dimensions, and zinc coating thickness at the factory, preventing the shipment of sub-standard materials.
