Craft sword manufacturers

For decorative or display swords, stainless steel (such as 440C) is preferred due to its high corrosion resistance and aesthetic shine, though it is brittle. For functional or practice swords (like HEMA or Katana replicas), look for high-carbon steel (1045, 1060, or 1095) or spring steel (9260), which offer the necessary toughness and flexibility. Ensure the blade undergoes proper heat treatment and tempering to prevent snapping during use.

The most critical safety feature is the Full Tang construction, where the blade steel extends through the entire length of the handle. Avoid 'rat-tail' tangs for anything other than wall-hangers. Additionally, check for secure hilt assembly (crossguard and pommel) to ensure no wobbling. For practice weapons, verify that the edges are blunted and the tip is rounded or thickened to meet safety standards.

Compliance varies significantly by destination. You must ensure the product meets local weapon laws; for example, the UK has strict bans on 'zombie knives' and specific curved blades, while the US requires clear labeling of origin. Always verify if the item is classified as a 'martial arts equipment' or a 'decorative ornament' to determine the correct HS Code (typically 9307.00) for customs clearance.

Professional suppliers on Made-in-China.com often offer OEM/ODM services. Key customization points include laser engraving for branding, choice of scabbard (saya) materials (solid wood, leather wrap, or ABS), and handle wrapping (Ito) styles. For high-end collectors, inquire about folded steel (Damascus style) patterns and genuine ray skin (Samegawa) for handles.

The biggest risk is Customs Seizure. Swords are often flagged as 'prohibited weapons' if documentation is incomplete. Always provide a detailed packing list and a 'Letter of Intent' stating the items are for decorative or sporting use. Use specialized couriers experienced in handling 'sensitive goods' and ensure the packaging is discreet but robust to prevent the blade from piercing the carton during transit.

Request a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI). Define a 'Golden Sample' and stipulate that bulk production must match its weight, balance point, and finish quality. Negotiate a milestone payment structure (e.g., 30% deposit, 70% after third-party inspection) to maintain leverage. For long-term partnerships, prioritize suppliers on Made-in-China.com who hold ISO 9001 certification.

Utilize Secured Trading Services offered by reputable platforms to ensure your funds are only released once the shipping documents are verified. Always conduct supplier background checks to confirm they have a physical factory and are not just a trading company. Verify their export licenses specifically for edged tools to avoid delays at the port of exit.
